About Me
Amisha Desai MPS, LMFT, is the Founder and CEO of the mental health practice Self Empowering Journeys in Montville, NJ. Amisha is pursuing her doctoral degree in Culture, Diversity, and Social Justice in a Global Context at National University. She has served as the Education Chair for the New Jersey Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and worked as an Adjunct Professor at Bergen Community College
She was born and raised in a Hindu family in India and immigrated to the USA in her mid-twenties. In her trajectory as an Indian Immigrant woman pursuing her education and later establishing her identity as a therapist, she has experienced microaggressions and marginalization. Thus, Amisha is highly concerned about power, privilege, and social justice issues and is committed to interrupting the status quo of socially unjust systems and structures through her work.
After more than fifteen years of direct practice, she has shifted from working with just individuals and families to working with communities at large, educating and advocating for religious and racial minorities. She is dedicated to the appropriate representation of the Asian Indian and Hindu cultures, educating therapeutic communities about unconscious bias, and maintaining a diverse and inclusion-focused practice.
Besides being a therapist and an educator, Amisha lives in New Jersey with her husband, mother-in-law, and two children.
